The best place
I had a great time here last night. Great people, great music and lots of love in the house - David of Unwed Fathers (austin, tx)
Such a wonderful ambience I wish there was more places like this in Brownsville. They have live music, coffee, beer, food, & great staff. Oh and they also have local vendors selling handmade things and offering henna art outside. I felt so at peace there and the people who were singing were amazing. There was even local artists in the back painting. I'll be back there in no time.
Excelente lugar muy buen ambiente y atencion
Great food and ambience! Had a nice quiet lunch! Will go another time when they have live music.
Delicious & CREATIVE coffee & teas! A chilled ambiance filled with local art & live music every evening. They have a good selection of craft beers that are worth trying and do try their deli styled foods! Near the back are board games you could bust out to spend some quality time with friends!
This is a great place to come and chill. The music is always live, never some stupid DJ, and it gets to the point where you can have a conversation without having to yell over the noise. They have two house bands and they are both amazing. Tons of different genres always rotating, and its never a dull moment. I love coming here with friends, and by myself to read comics. They have a wide selection of coffee and beer, as well as wine. 5 stars mang!
We went in for lunch - it was crowded. The food and service were great. The fajita chicken salad is quite tasty. We'll go back.
---GREAT -- SANDWICHES WITH GREAT SAUCES !- HUMMUS - BROWNIES - TEA!!
ALL HITS THE SPOT!
El Hueso de Fraile is awesome!!! Always the best musicians performing amazing music. El Hueso has great choices of delicious sandwiches, coffees, teas, and the best salads. La Familia will treat you special everyone you want to drop by for a visit.

Great beer selection, amazing coffee, live music nightly, feels like home atmosphere...very friendly owners and staff...awesome place to go and chill with friends or family. Great music selections.
I love this place. Even in the afternoon, when there's no live music, it just has a great onda. Delicious, simple sandwiches and salads at good prices. Good coffee drinks, though they tend to put sugar in almost everything. So if you don't want it sweet remember to tell them. ("Them" is the Foncerrada family, the majority of employees you see are Foncerradas.)
There is no place that's like Hueso, anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley. I remember a somewhat similar coffeehouse in Los Angeles -- maybe in Echo Park or Boyle Heights? -- but Hueso has made great use of its geographic location, becoming uniquely tied to Brownsville as well as the Frontera. The music is high-quality and eclectic, performed live every night, usually starting around 9pm. In one night, you probably hear 2 or more of the following:
- Acoustic singer-songwriter, coffeehouse style (the U.S. genre)
- Acoustic singer-songwriter, trova style (the Mexico genre)
- Old-timey Appalachian gospel
- Traditional country
- Western swing
- Country blues
- Folk music from various regions of Latin America
- Acoustic punk (I remember hearing Misfits and Gogol Bordello)
- Classical piano (only heard this one time there, but it was excellent)
- Poetry readings, English and Spanish
You get the idea. As another review mentioned, these musicians come from many places - there might be a winter Texan from Wisconsin playing banjo, or a touring folk guitarist from Mexico City. The groups that play every week are Los Dabs, La Mision, and Marea Baja, which all include members of the Foncerrada family.
I walked in on a random Tuesday about 12:30. Small lunch crowd of folks that looked like they worked at the University. Service was good but this is not fast food. No complaints as the sandwich that I choose was made to order and done so from scratch. The sandwich was artisan-tasty, light and filling. I had a cold green tea that was fresh brewed and delicious. The ambiance is chill and laid back. A small stage held a variety of musical instruments that no doubt are used to coax reggae and folk inspired music which, as the vibe and decor would have you believe, fit in right at home here. I'm definitely gonna have to come back at night with friends to see how this house rocks! While I waited I breezed through the small magazine selection they had then decided to walk around the place and take in some of the local art paintings and sculptures that donned the walls. After I finished the meal I texted a few friends to recommend the place. I honestly will back to explore some of their other offerings and maybe take in a show. Brownsville, support local owned businesses especially when they deliver the goods at a reasonable price. This locale is definitely worth a try.
Today was the first time my wife and I went after hearing so many good reviews! It was more than I was expecting! Such a family feeling, people greeted us and made us feel great! Food is amazing and coffee also! I recommend the cold coffee Veracruz! It is delicious! And as if that wasn't enough, amazing live music! This is a place for music lovers and yes their is wifi! Hahaha love this place and highly recommend it!

If you come to this town, come to El Hueso de Fraile. This place is a "must-see" when it comes to something to do in Brownsville. The drinks are decent, and the food is not filling, but it's the wonderful atmosphere that keeps people coming back. The place has great, chill music playing during the day, and different type of live music at night. You can always see people doing their homework and drinking some tea when you walk by the establishment. Plenty of local musicians put on a show all 7 days of the week, but the house bands keep the people entertained forever. A true gem of a place. Seriously, what are you doing reading this? You should be on your way there. 5 stars mang!
This place is truly a local gem. The food and drinks are alright, honestly theres nothing special when it comes to that. However, it's El Hueso's atmosphere that has me, and so many other people coming back. During the day, it's a quiet location to get some tea, relax for a bit, listen to some music and read a good book. At night, there's always live music playing. There's two house bands, La Mission and Los Dabs. Both consist of amazing musicians, and always keep the crowd entertained. Then there's always a handful of local artists that play as well. Combine the good music with their BYOB policy, and you have a great atmosphere. They also sell a good assortment of interesting beers. I highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone; especially if you're looking for something else to do in Brownsville on a Friday night other than all the stupid clubs.
This is a great place to just chillax....love it
Really great local place to get coffee. The atmosphere is very cozy, and they feature local art and musicians. There is a also a small library in the back. Everyone is really nice and we always have a good time there. A hidden gem in Brownsville!
Love this place excellent music and now they have good drinks
I love the environment and the drinks. I haven't tried the food. It is a great place to hang out and have a chilling/relaxing time with friends and even by yourself. Great to meet people. I have friends that have met their soul mates there...
Fantastic place to hang out, visit.
The best gathering place in the entire RGV. Music, art, and conversation season the food and drink. Bring a friend. Bring several friends!
Highly recommended, great tea's
Went one time because Wifi died back at the house and had an assignment due at midnight... reggae night and procrastination really changes you...
Great food, good coffee, excellent beer selection, and most important, amazing music!!! Its a little piece of NYC in Brownsville...
I've been here maybe three times and each time is memorable. My first visit I was highly impressed and even inspired by the owners. They are a tight-nit family who also performs on stage with exotic and transformational music. They have really good coffee and food. The scene is a very down to earth and artsy place. We Love this place, hands down! =)
Very cool place in downtown. Went during the day and tried one of the interesting iced fruit juice with coffee drinks. Combination was much better than I expected. Definitely recommend stopping in if you are downtown. However, my suggestion is that the staff work to be more friendly to tourists.
When we walked in to Hueso de Fraile this evening, we were pleasantly surprised at how many people of all ages were in attendance. The ode to Frida Kahlo by the Literature Circle from Brownsville was refreshing, and offered insight to Frida Kahlo's life with Diego Rivera. What a wonderful way to introduce literature to any age. The coffee was delicious, and reasonably priced. I particularly like that it is a very interesting place, with art pieces, jewelry, and other interesting objects spread out throughout the coffee shop. The music was great, and we were treated very well by the family who runs this establishment. I recommend that you visit, you will not be disappointed.
Awesome coffee/tea shop with live acoustic music. The music and art by talented artists give the place a welcoming and unique atmosphere. You can buy art and jewelry. The coffee drinks are delicious and unique. In Brownsville this is the best place for coffee. You can color your adult coloring books here!
OMG. A hard-working family-owned coffee shop and donation-based bar (temporarily) where the family in question is a 6-member ensemble that's been playing together along the border for over 20 years. They're open 7 days and nights a week. you never know what guest artists from the local university or visiting from their native Guanajuato, Mexico will be on stage, but the heart of the place is this amazing hard-working immigrant family that represents a new kind of American dream. Mcallen wonders where they went. Brownsville wonders what took them so long.
This coffee house is not only a business. It is the heart of a thriving music community. As Eric said, El Hueso De Fraile's owners are a family of musicians who started the business, in part, to give them a regular venue to perform. This is a terrific place for musicians to find people to jam with. El Hueso De Fraile was the place that felt most like for home for this northerner. I wish I had found it earlier. I will be sad to move now that I found such a terrific place to hang out.
If you want to hear some awesome music in a comfy, artsy, unpretentious, smoke-free environment then you must check out El Hueso de Fraile. A family of musicians opened this coffee-house and they are a treat to watch. Everyone gets into the act - mom, dad and their grown children. They sing and play all kinds of instruments - guitars, violin, flute, keyboards and even freaky things like the double ocarina. They sound fantastic and the music isn't overly loud (like at so many other places).
They also serve non-alcoholic drinks (love their fresh-squeezed lemonade and interesting coffee concoctions), light food (sandwiches, salads), and desserts (pumpkin gooey bars rock!!). You can bring your own alcohol too and last time I was there I saw lots of people doing that. You might want to call for info on how that works. I haven't been there during the day, but this is definitely a great choice for a lovely evening out in Brownsville. Food 4/5, drinks 4/5, music 6/5.
Great music, great coffee, great service, and the best free wifi in town. I love this place
Forgot my lunch today so I decided to try it since it was so close to work. The sandwich was great & it tasted good warm but he did take a little longer than I thought to get it ready so I had to take most of it to go. By the time I got to enjoy it, it was cold. :( Next time I'll definetly call ahead. Also had a basic iced coffee which was also really good.
There was almost no one during lunch time today so I didnt have to wait in line, big plus.
This is a great place to hang out and listen to music. BYOB just pay the fee. The sandwiches are good but can take awhile to prepare. Not for tight lunches. The coffee is ok.
Relaxing atmosphere very different to other places in brownsville. I love their coffee and sandwiches. Big fan of this place!
Unico! Calmado/chill y chido! I had a La Michoacana iced coffee on my first visit to this town and it was perfectly sweet. Owners have a nice set up of art, few but interesting books, and jewelry along the perimeter of the place. They boast live music every night?! I will never visit Brownsville downtown without stopping here. It's a true center of good vibes and creative cultivation.
Great atmosphere, good coffee and music. Very chill. Tasty sandwiches too
The staff/family is very nice. I'll never forget how I left my phone there accidentally once and they saved it for me for the rest of the day. The owner answered my phone call to let me know it was there. Those little gestures do mean a lot to me
Love this place! The location, the atmosphere, the music, and not to mention the great coffee and tea. I've tried almost everything, and it's all good! They have local artist showcase their work, and live musicians every night.
Hueso is the gem of the Valley. The coffee is delicious, but we go for the Foncerradas. They are such a welcoming and talented family...the whole community is at home at Hueso.
